Lagos State government, has on Wednesday, December 9, sealed 53
churches, mosques and hotels across the city over alleged noise
pollution and other environmental nuisances, this came as a result of complaints from
residents.
Following the sealing of the religious houses and
hotels, the General Manager, GM, of the Lagos State Environmental
Protection Agency, LASEPA, Engr. Adebola Shabi disclosed that the
premises that were shut down were initially approved for residential,
but after few years, they were converted into worship centres.
He said: “It has been constituting nuisance to other neighbours.”
“Some
of the affected facilities have been served demolition notices before
the eventual closure. Besides, the growing rate of worship centres calls
for serious regulations, especially in the areas of noise generated
across the state.”
The GM also said that the hotels were shut down for failing to conduct
and submit Environmental Impact Assessment report, adding that the state
government would not condone usage of old latrines or improper disposal
of sewage.
